Manufacturing Laser beam welding: reduction of hot cracking in high-strength steels

To avoid the generation of weld seam defects like hot cracks during the laser beam welding process of high-strength steels, the influence of solidification conditions on hot crack formation is investigated. The solidification conditions can be changed by spatial beam oscillation whereby the melt bath geometry is influenced during the welding process and the hot cracking susceptibility is reduced.
